Surface Finish Requirements
Meeting specified surface finish callouts of the seal housings are a critical aspect for maintaining seal integrity. Conversion of the European metric standard Rz to the more common US standard Ra is not a simple conversion. The reason for this difficulty is due to the method of measuring. In determining a Rz reading, the actual depth of each machine groove is measured and the surface finish is determined by these exact measurements. In determining a Ra reading, the machined surface is measured and the finish is determined by averaging the readings.
Both Rz and Ra standards are valid methods of determining surface finish, but each method reflects different characteristics of machined surfaces. Because of this difference, a direct calculation for conversion is not so easy.
Typically Morcor recommends the following housing surface finishes for o-ring style face seals:
- Ra surface finish of 3.75 to 6.25 micro meters
- Ra surface finish of 150 to 250 micro inches
- RMS surface finish of 166.5 to 277.5
Typically Morcor recommends the following housing surface finishes for square bore style face seals:
- Ra surface finish of 3.95 to 7.85 micro meters
- Ra surface finish of 158 to 314 micro meters
- RMS surface finish of 173.8 to 345.4
Morcor Ltd engineering support should be contacted with any additional questions regarding surface finish requirements.
